PNGDF with CMCA Middle Fly Association support, treat 67 patients in remote Western Province

To serve and to protect is a call of duty by the military, which includes humanitarian aid to civilians in need. The Papua New Guinea Defence Force in partnership with Middle Fly Women and Children’s Association (MFWCA) provided free dental care and general medical health checks to the Middle Fly Communities on 29 January this year. The MFWCA requested security presence for a trip downriver and provided fuel to the soldiers for the trip.  A platoon of PNGDF soldiers while doing their routine border patrol along the PNG/Indonesian Border, provided the women executive’s security support. While downriver an association executive fell ill and was unable to get treatment at the local aid post due to a shortage of medical drugs. The soldiers stepped in and provided medical assistance to the executive, and extended their service to villagers in the Middle Fly District of Western Province. According to Raymond Walo, Public Officer for the association, a total of 67 patients were seen and administered some form of medication. “It was a good example of partnership between the PNGDF and the women association and was greatly appreciated by the local people,” Mr. Walo said. Executives of the association also took the opportunity to receive dental checks. Lieutenant Nazi Francis, second in charge of the PNGDF platoon deployed to Western Province Forward Operational Base, said their medical service was limited by the medicine stock intended for their use while on patrol, but seeing the need, they used the medicines on hand to treat the villagers.

Prevalent diseases in the Western Province

Middle Fly Women & Children Association executive receives medical assistance from PNGDF Medic.

Combat Medic Private James Windi from the PNGDF treated villagers experiencing arthritis (35), toothache (7), and malaria (25). “These three diseases were common in the community but arthritis was widely experienced among females due to regular and irregular tasks they did every day”. The soldiers provided medical support at Kaviananga village CRC church grounds. Supporting the Middle Fly Women and Children’s Association, the team treated patients from Kaviananga and neighbouring villages. Association president Charlotte Mathews was frank in her praise of the PNGDF soldiers and stated that their presence was a blessing for the local community and hoped that they could do community visits more often.

Landon Eric Omoa – OTDF Contracts Officer

Education stops only when you stop living so never give up to achieve your goals even if it takes years is my word of advice to everyone.

My name is Landon Eric Omoa, I come from Maipai’o village, in the Gulf Province and I have 21 years of work experience as a supply chain professional. Today I am the Contracts Officer with Ok Tedi Development Foundation (OTDF).

I completed my Grade 10 back in 2000 when it was still Tokarara High School, to date is 21 years ago now it has upgraded to Secondary level. It took me 19 years to finally seize the opportunity to do my studies when I joined OTDF back in early 2019 since my previous years were all tied up with responsibilities to help my Dad support my younger siblings to complete their education and be financially secure. I am looking forward to receiving my Grade 12 certificate this year, 2022.

I feel awesome even though it took me 19 years to achieve this goal with all of life’s many challenges.

It was challenging but as we become more mature in life it makes us prioritize our work and studies at the same time. Well after I receive my Higher Secondary Education Certificate (HSEC), my goal is to apply for further studies for a Bachelor’s Degree or even a Master in Business Administration (MBA) program in PNG or abroad.

I was on self-sponsor and sacrificed my salary to pay for my studies.

I paid a total of K3200 (K400 x 8 subjects) for my matriculation studies and sacrificed my salary which was worth it all.

Lower Ok Tedi Investment Company(LOTIC) Bige Limited (LBL Holdings) hosted a Women’s Day lunch for female staff of Kiunga and Bige operations in recognition of International Women’s Day.

This occasion recognised the valuable contributions women play at their respective sites.

“First and foremost let me wish a happy international women’s day to you and all our lady colleagues” LBL Chief Executive Officer Anthony Amerasinghe took the opportunity to thank OTML managers of Kiunga and Bige, OTDF CEO and Dredeco Works Manager for allowing their female staff to attend the function and for the cooperation and support extended.

OTDF Executive Manager – Program Services, Mr. Eric Kuman made an Important Speech during the gathering.

“I reaffirm that I believe in Women gender equality. The theme about ‘Breaking -Bias’ and create equal opportunities starts at home. We parents must promote the agenda and train our girls to claim the space. Today’s world a girl can fit into our society by marketing their beauty or being an educated professional. The latter will be most preferred to break the biasness in the developing world. Depends on how much we invest in them, organizations will recognize their potentials and give them opportunity to rise-up and live their dreams”.
